Hagar Hangs Tough at Stockton |
 |
By Frank Jordan - Team
Owner, Golden State Racing
June 27th -
Another rough night for us at Stockton 99
Speedway. Katie Hagar qualified 6th out of an
18 car field and with a straight-up start, Katie began
the race in the 6th position. |
|
She picked her way to the front running
in 2nd place by lap 43 of the 50 lap main.
After several cautions & restarts, it looked like we had
a solid 2nd and possible a shot at 1st.
Katie exited turn four too high and got loose
hitting the wall and spinning around. A competitor hit
her car extremely hard causing major damage. Katie was
shook up a bit but is okay…can’t say so about the car.
Disappointing end to a good race. We will be off for a
few weeks and will keep you all posted. |

Diversity Driver Riding in the Fast Lane at 99 |
|
By Scott
Linesburgh - Record Staff Writer - June 27, 2009 6:00 AM
STOCKTON - Katie Hagar traveled 2,500 miles from her home to
advance her auto racing career. And it didn't take long before
she proved to be as fast as anyone at the quarter-mile track in
Stockton.
Hagar, a 23-year-old native of Damariscotta, Maine, and a member
of NASCAR's Drive For Diversity program, set the Western Late
Model qualifying record two weeks ago at Stockton 99 Speedway.
She will go for her first win at 6 p.m. today when the track
hosts twin 50-lap main events in the WLM division.

First Female in the West, D4D Driver Katie Hagar Breaks Track
Record at Stockton on June 13th |
 |
By Frank Jordan - Team
Owner, Golden State Racing
June 13th - Well we had a
typical night of short track racing with all the bumping
& banging you can expect. The bright side is that Katie
Hagar now owns the track record in qualifying at
Stockton 99 Speedway. |
She is
the first woman ever to hold a track record at the famed
speedway. She broke the record with a blistering 13.57,
hanging two tenths on the rest of the field.
She started 9th with the invert and quickly moved to 6th
but got turned around by the 5th place car. Re-starting
from the back, Katie began passing cars on the outside
(very difficult at Stockton) and inside as well quickly
getting back in contention. Halfway through the main
event the same car that caused the earlier issue got
into the 6th place car turning him around and up into
Katie’s path. The contact wasn’t bad until the 8th place
car slid under our bumper. Too much cosmetic damage to
get her back out in time… we had to call it a night.
Katie was extremely disappointed as she clearly had the
fastest race car on the track. As they say “that’s
racing”. We are off next weekend and will be back at
Stockton on June 27th. It has been amazing to watch her
fan base explode here at Stockton. Their announcer makes
a big deal to the crowd about Katie and our team’s
participation with the Drive for Diversity program.
Katie is definitely a crowd favorite!

NASCAR D4D Driver Earns Two 2nd Place Finishes
in Twin Races at Stockton 99 on June 6th |
 |
By Frank Jordan - Team
Owner, Golden State Racing
June 6th - We had a very
good outing with Katie Hagar Saturday night at Stockton
99 Speedway for their “Twin races”. She qualified 3rd
quick with a lap of 13.77 and started third in the first
main event. |
By lap
15 Katie took over the 2nd spot and began to chase down
the leader. She pulled to the inside of the leader on
lap 30 to make the pass but the engine developed a miss.
Losing power, Katie was able to hang on for a 2nd place
finish in the first 50 lap feature. The second Main had
Katie starting 4th on the grid. She jumped out to second
place in the early going and was able to run down the
leader by lap 23. Katie got under the leader coming off
turn four and almost had the pass complete when the
leader turned down on her causing both to spin.
Restarting from the back, Katie raced her way through
the field running down the leader to finish a strong
second. We had the best car by far…just ran out of laps.
This is Katie’s best two finishes this season and had
several of her fellow racers and officials congratulate
her on how well she ran both races. She was surrounded
by fans afterwards as well with many women and young
girls excited to meet her. Katie did a good job…we are
all proud of her!
We will be back at Stockton next weekend….wish us luck!

Golden State Racing’s D4D Driver Katie Hagar
Hits the New Stockton 99 Speedway |
 |
Second year participant of
the NASCAR Drive for Diversity program, Katie Hagar has
been able to experience and develop at two different
tracks this year. The first five races of Hagar’s
schedule took place at Madera Speedway. Now the D4D
Driver hit the new re-paved Stockton 99 Speedway on
Saturday May 23rd, for a 150 lap main event. |
Hagar
showed 11th fastest in both practice sessions. She
picking it up a notch to qualify
6th fastest out of the field of 26 cars for Round
#1 of the Tri-Holiday Classic Series presented by
California Welding Supply Company.
Hagar and teammate, Eric Schmidt had to run a 25 lap "B"
Main for starting position in the main event. Hagar
started outside pole, next to past champion Eric. Katie
finished 3rd out of the 10 non-weekly competitors that
were not locked into the 150.
Katie started the #14 GSR Holiday Inn, Monte Carlo in
17th position. While Hagar kept the car clean and
avoided many wrecks, she ran her fastest lap of 13.92 on
lap 64. On Lap 75, a mandatory pit stop was made due to
the right rear tire blistering. Several laps later,
Hagar was forced to pit again due to a car in front of
her blowing a driveline, covering Hagar’s car and
windshield with fluid. Two right side tire changes were
made and Katie had to start at the rear of the field.
Hagar brought in a 18th place finish, pulling in behind
teammate Eric Schmidt due to track politics and
un-organization of track positioning.
“For my first time here, I think I’ve shown everyone
that I’m here to race and to race hard and fast. We
qualified really well and still had to run a "B" Main.
We didn’t want to have to run our race tires an extra 25
laps more than everyone else, when they only wanted to
send one car home. Having to start in the back just
increases our chances of being involved in wrecks. Most
of the race I had nowhere to go. I knew I had to be
patient and be up on the wheel. We’re still searching
for sponsorships this year, so the last thing we
want to do is tear up equipment. They started off
counting caution laps, then they didn’t I guess. Half
the time my spotter had no idea where we lined up. It
was a very confusing race. My team and I made the right
choice by bringing the car home in one piece.” Hagar
commented after the 150 lap race, “As frustrating as it
is, we can come back and show them again next time.”
Katie also participated in the Roseville High School
Career Day on Friday May 22nd. While handing out
pamphlets, the D4D Driver drew in many minorities
interested in the mechanical and fabrication fields.
Hagar provided a race video, autograph cards, and her
#14 GSR Western Late Model in order to reach out to the
troubled teens that were looking to further their
education after completing High School.
Katie’s next race will be at Stockton 99 Speedway on
June 6th for the 99 lap main event. “I’m looking forward
to racing hard there again, this time my dad will be by
my side. It makes a big difference to me when having him
there.” |

Hagar Finds Her Focus:
D4D Driver Uses Racing to Get Back on Track |
|
by
Michelle Langley
Katie Hagar is focused. She’s focused on her racing career;
she’s focused on maintaining a healthy lifestyle; she’s focused
on helping kids learn to believe in themselves.
Her focus is paying off, too. She’s a second year participant in
the Drive for Diversity program, racing for Golden State Racing
at Madera (Calif.) Speedway. She has two top fives and six top
10s in six starts this season.
The 22-year-old Hagar wasn’t always this driven, though.
Like many kids, Hagar went through some growing pains as she
struggled to define herself as a pre-teen. She found her grades
slipping and her attention in school diminishing. To add to her
struggles, her sixth grade teacher died suddenly from a heart
attack.
“I went through some challenging times,” says Hagar. “I was
discouraged, unfocused and I wasn’t making the best decisions.”
That was before she climbed behind the wheel of a racecar.
“I was 11 years old… My dad pointed me towards racing as a way
to refocus my life,” she says. “He knew he could connect with me
if I had a way to focus.”
Motorsports wasn’t entirely new to Hagar, a native of
Damariscotta, Maine. Her parents, Mark and Cindy, ran a race
team, competing in the Charger Division at local tracks in New
England. Hagar grew up around the track watching her dad’s team
compete, but never took an interest in competing herself,
instead playing soccer and basketball.
But when Hagar was struggling to find direction in her life, her
dad knew that racing was exactly what his daughter needed.
And he was right.
When Hagar was 11, she began competing in go-karts. She
transitioned to the Allison Legacy Series when she was 14. By
the time she was 17 she was racing an Open Wheeled Modified and
a Super Late Model in the Pro All Star Series in New England.
She knew she wanted to make racing a career.
“My dad has always tried to be one step ahead of me,” says
Hagar. “He knew that I needed something in my life that I could
devote myself to 110 percent, and racing was it for me.”
Hagar did continue to play soccer and basketball as she honed
her racing skills, and she graduated from Lincoln Academy High
School in New Castle, Maine in 2004.
Today, as a participant in the Drive for Diversity program,
Hagar’s life revolves around racing and doing everything she can
to find a competitive edge. She’s at the gym first thing every
morning. She handles her own public relations and marketing, and
is always ready to make a pitch to a potential sponsor. On race
day, you can find her in the grandstands, signing autographs
before she climbs into her race car.
“It’s all about staying healthy, positive and determined,” she
says.
Away from the race track, Hagar is using her experiences to help
other kids who may be in the same place she was when she was
11-years-old. With the support of her father, she visits schools
to with her youth program, Believe in Yourself 101. The program
reaches different age groups, including elementary, middle and
high school students.
“I use my story to show kids what you can achieve when you
believe in yourself,” Hagar explains. “If you set a reachable
goal and put your mind to it, you can achieve success in life. I
went through some tough times, but I was able to mature and make
the right choices. That’s what I try to instill in the kids I
meet though Believe in Yourself 101.”
Hagar’s success story isn’t finished, though. She’s still
determined to find success as a professional race car driver,
but knows she hasn’t chosen the easy road.
“I’ll take it as far as it will go, but I know this is the path
I was meant to take.” |

A Sixth at Madera on May 2nd |
|
We had a bitter
sweet night of racing at Madera Speedway with Katie on May 2nd.
The #14 ran third in both practice sessions and qualified 5th
overall. Katie was running 2nd when on lap 35 a car turned her
around, causing another to crash into her. She was able to
continue and finish 6th in a very light field of cars.
We are off now for a few weeks…we’ll keep you posted. |
Golden State Racing’s Pit Crew Earns Hagar
A Top Finish at Madera on April 25th |
|
Katie Hagar and
the GS Racing Team put together another good effort Saturday
night at Madera. Practice saw Katie 3rd on the board and she
qualified 2nd fast in a solid field of cars. The 50 lap Feature
had Katie racing in 3rd place much of the way. However late in
the event, the #90 car blew-up as he and Katie entered turn
three. With oil everywhere they both crashed.
While a major track clean up was going on, the GS crew patched
up the car. Katie was able to make it back out on the track,
finishing the race on the lead lap in 7th position. A good solid
night with all that had happened.
We will be back at Madera next weekend for “Twin 50’s”…hope to
see some of you there. |

Katie 5th in Round 1 of the HOTWOOD 333
at Madera Speedway on April 11th |
|
The GS Racing
team put together a good night of racing with Katie Hagar in the
"HOTWOOD” 111 lap feature. She qualified 10th out of the 17 car
field which had five NASCAR late model champions representing
All American Speedway, Altamont Motorsports Park, and Stockton
99 Speedway plus the reigning Madera champion.
Katie raced in the lead pack all night holding 3rd position most
of the way. With a few late cautions Katie brought the car home
clean to a fifth place finish, tieing her previous best run of
the year.
“We struggled a little bit throughout practice and qualifying.
Once my crew chief and I talked about some changes to make
before the main event, we were able to figure out one rockin'
fast car! I really owe it to my guys tonight. I couldn’t have
done it with them.”
Katie currently is fifth in the points at Madera Speedway. She
is off next weekend and will return to action on April 25th. |

SCHMIDT WINS WHILE HAGAR COMES HOME FIFTH FOR GOLDEN STATE
RACING AT MADERA on 4/11 |
|
GSR
PRESS RELEASE - ROSEVILLE, Calif - - Eric Schmidt
made his first win of the season a big win, claiming the win in
the grueling Hotwood 111 for the NASCAR Whelen All-American
Series Western Late Models at Madera Speedway in Madera, Calif.
Golden State Racing teammate Katie Hagar of Sacramento pulled in
a strong fifth place finish for the team as well, in a hugely
successful night for the Frank Jordan-owned outfit that competes
full-time at Madera.
Schmidt, the 2007 All American Speedway and 2006 SRL champion,
had been in an uncharacteristic slump while trying to figure out
the one-third mile asphalt oval just north of Fresno.
But on Saturday, Schmidt proved to any doubters that he “still
has it,” qualifying second and leading 88 laps for the victory.
The field featured champions from every central valley NASCAR
track, and was arguably the toughest Western Late Model field
this season in the state of the California.
“I ran down there three or four times in the SRL,” Schmidt said.
“I just needed some time to figure out the Late Model tires.
Also, in the Late Model at Madera the top groove is preferred
and that took some getting used to.”
Schmidt moved quickly from his ninth starting position to take
the lead from Jeff Belletto on lap 23.
“Sometimes it seems like you have those races where you start in
the back and it takes a long time to get to the front but it
wasn’t that way on Saturday,” Schmidt said.
For Hagar, she rolled off the grid second and ran third for more
than half of the race. Hagar was passed by Gottula on lap 58 and
then went back-and-forth with Rick Thompson.
Hagar ended up finishing fifth in the final rundown.
“Its good for the whole team to have (Katie) finishing races,”
Schmidt said. “That’s what’s important for her to learn. What’s
great is Saturday night we didn’t tear up any equipment, which
gives us time to improve our equipment back at the shop rather
than spend the time to repair it.”
The incredible runs for the Golden State Racing team sees
Schmidt just 15 points behind Gottula in the points chase, with
Hagar fifth but building up momentum for a run to the front of
the standings.
Golden State Racing will return to action April 25 with a 50 lap
feature as part of the NASCAR Camping World Series West night of
racing at Madera Speedway.

Katie Earns Her First Top 5 Finish at Madera Speedway on March
28th with Golden State Racing |
|
March 28, 2009
- Katie Hagar qualified 4th but moved up to the 3rd position
after officials sent one of the competitors to the rear. Hagar
started 2nd after an invert of the field of eleven cars.
In the first 50 lap main event, Hagar held her own, staying in
the top 5. She ran the outside line while battling West Coast
competitors Ross Strmiska and Jacob Gomes for the first 15 laps.
Crew Chief Frank Vincent coached Katie, while trying to get her
down on the inside line to let her tires to cool down. The D4D
Driver “stayed up on the wheel” bringing the #14 to a 5th place
finish.
For the second 50 lap main event, Katie worked with her team to
make changes to the “tight” race car.
“We were trying to get the car to rotate in the middle better,
but I think it took all of our front bite away. We started in
the rear and just couldn’t advance any. I tried racing the #51
car hard, but once I snuck under him, I knew I was going around
and didn’t want to take him with me. So unfortunately we spun
coming out of turn four. But my crew chief and I talked about it
on the radio - let’s bring it home in one piece, especially
after I told him I had a left rear going down. We’ll get ’em
next time!”
Katie finished 8th earning another top ten finish.
Katie’s next race is Saturday April 11th again at Madera
Speedway. |

Hagar
ran in the top-five throughout the event before spinning
in wet weather with just two laps to go in the 50 lap
race. She was scored in 9th position on the tail-end of
the lead lap.
It was a successful outing for the two racers Hagar
recently relocated from Maine to Sacramento for the 2009
campaign. Schmidt ran less than half a dozen races in
his 2008 season while serving a mentor role
|
for
GSR’s young drivers. He showed no signs rust
Saturday while leading 35 laps.
The second 50 lap feature on Saturday was canceled due

Katie
Qualifies 3rd and Runs 3rd for 48 Laps
Until Rain Hits First Madera Outing |
March 21, 2009 - NASCAR Drive
for Diversity Driver Katie Hagar and Golden State Racing had a
great first day at NASCAR sanctioned Madera Speedway on Saturday
March 21st. With the help of Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites in
Madera, California, the team stayed overnight after Friday’s
test session and was back at the track early Saturday morning
for a competitive race day at the season opening
Smokey Hanoian Classic Presented by Miller Lite.
Katie hit the charts 2nd fastest in practice out of a field of
fourteen. “The car is handling really well. Honestly I haven’t
been so comfortable in a race car like that in a long time. I’m
excited for this year and for working well with everyone on the
team. My crew chief Frank Vincent brings a lot to the table with
me…and for me. We’re already getting into a routine.”
Hagar was able to qualify 3rd fastest. The Madera stands were
full of fans for the first time since the Southwest Tour was
there.
When Madera runs twin 50 lap features, the first qualifying lap
is where you start in the first 50 Lapper and the second
qualifying lap is the starting position for the second 50 lap
race. Hagar started 8th in the first feature.
With rain hovering over the start of the first 50 lapper, Katie
worked the GSR #14 up to 6th place within ten laps. With only
two cautions, Katie followed teammate Eric Schmidt into 3rd. It
started to sprinkle while the field was getting ready for a
restart on lap 48. The field dove into turn 1, and cars stated
sliding at the apex. Katie got hit in the left rear quarter
panel, sending the #14 and two other cars into spins. The
caution flag was waved along with the checkered flag due to the
rain.
“I’m not disappointed in the results. I was told I put on one
heck of a show for the fans. Everyone on the team is pleased
with my performance tonight. I know there’s a win in me and this
car. I know we can get one! I’m ready to come back next week and
do the same thing!” Katie stated after her GSR debut.
Katie Hagar’s next race will be at Madera Speedway on March
28th. |

Official Release - January 22, 2009 -
CONCORD, N.C.
– The Drive for Diversity initiative continues to move forward
in 2009 with an expanded driver lineup and a new management
group. Twelve drivers will participate in the sixth season of
Drive for Diversity -- four in the Camping World Series and
eight in the Whelen All-American Series. In addition, former
Dale Earnhardt Inc. president Max Siegel and his new marketing
and entertainment company, 909 Group, will take over day-to-day
management of the initiative.
“We are proud of the progress this
important initiative and its drivers have made over the past
five years,” said NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France. “The
expansion to 12 drivers and 11 teams is a great sign of
opportunities that continue to be created for young diverse
drivers. We look forward to the leadership of Max Siegel and
know he will help bring Drive for Diversity to the next level.”
Entering its sixth season,
Drive for Diversity is NASCAR’s leading on-track diversity
initiative. The program is designed to give young minority and
female drivers opportunities to compete with established NASCAR
teams at the grassroots level. Since 2004, 22 drivers have
competed in Drive for Diversity, winning 28 races. The 2009
expansion from eight to 12 drivers comes two years after the
program expanded to include teams in the NASCAR Camping World
Series.
This year’s class represents
drivers from across the country. Five drivers will return from
2008 and will be joined by seven new drivers.

HAGAR
PARTICIPATES IN ANNUAL NASCAR
DRIVE FOR DIVERSITY COMBINE |
|
 |
In October
most racing series are starting to end their seasons, not for
Katie Hagar. The second week in October Katie flew from
Sacremento, California to Portland, Maine to compete in a super
late model race just before flying to North Carolina to help
crew chief, a racing friend and past Drive for Diversity
candidate. Katie played both crew chief and driver role as she
also got some practice laps around historic, Hickory Motor
Speedway.
“ If It wasn’t for having a friend who trusts your judgment on
car changes and help driver coach them, I wouldn’t of been able
to get this experience. It was such a good feeling to work on
both sides of racing and understand concepts and how a driver
and crew chief interact.”
On Sunday October 12th,2008 Katie left the state of
North Carolina and traveled the two and a half hour drive to
South Boston, Virginia where the NASCAR Drive for Diversity
Program took place. |

Katie Hagar has reached out to young individuals by giving
presentations at school assemblies. Katie is living proof
that anything is possible for those who remain focused and
learn to block out the negative. She has created the
"Believe in Yourself 101" program for kids of all ages,
telling her life story of a female in a male dominated sport
and how racing was her road to life....from the time she
began racing go-karts, Katie has been encouraged and guided
by the people who surrounded her. Realizing how critical the
school years are for many young individuals, Katie has a
combination of approaches that include motivational
speeches, demonstrations and hands-on activities.

"Flat Stanley's
Adventures" |
|
Katie received a Flat Stanley from a 3rd Grader in Virginia.
When given a Flat Stanley you have to take him wherever you go
so he can experience the same adventures as you! The pictures
below show some of his adventures, including joining Katie at
the Golden State Racing annual racing pre-season cookout on
March 15th.
“This is what a team does, I’m happy to be a part of it all this
year.” Katie stated after riding dirt bikes with roommate and
fabricator Mellissa Hakes and Kerrie Jordan, Daughter of Frank
Jordan, Golden State Racing Team Owner.

Katie Re-Visits Her Grammar School |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
On May 8th, 2008
Katie flew from Sacramento, California to re-visit Great Salt
Bay where she attended the K-8 Grammar school in Damariscotta,
Maine.
Katie gave a motivational speech to the kids in grades 6-8 about
her personal and professional life. From the time she began
racing go-karts and throughout her school years she has been
encouraged and guided by the people who surround her. Her self
esteem plays a major role in allowing her to achieve her goals
in life, particularly as a race car driver in a male dominated
sport.
The purpose of this program is to pass on the ability to better
one's self by using yourself as a tool. Katie has had a unique
opportunity in life and has achieved this by believing in
herself through the good and the bad. Realizing that the school
years play a key role in time for many young individuals, Katie
has a combination of approaches that include motivational
speeches, demonstrations and hands on activities which
demonstatethat they are the key to their own success.
Katie ended her 45 minute motivational talk by handing out
t-shits, signing autograph cards and racing go-karts around the
gymnasium that the kids use during their physical education
classes. Katie was represented by a female student, the rest of
the field was represented by faculty. Katie would like to thank
and congratulate her represented driver who pulled off a
spectacular win!
Katie hopes to return to G.S.B again in the near future and
continue to make more special appearances to schools all over
the United States.
